Stephen Sturk is composer-in-residence at St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in San Diego. He is also a co-founder and conductor of Cappella Gloriana, a professional choral chamber ensemble, founded in 1996 in San Diego.


From 1993 to 1997 he served on the faculty of the University of San Diego, where he was Director of the Choral Scholars Program. In addition, he has served as Director of Music at several churches in the San Diego area.


Prior to coming to California in 1991, Sturk had a successful 17-year career as conductor, composer and tenor in New York City. He was Music Director of The New York Motet Choir, and Associate Conductor of the choirs at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. From 1980 to 1983 he was director of The Juilliard Singers at The Juilliard School of Music.


Also a nationally recognized composer of church music, Sturk has been the recipient of many important commissions, including works for churches in California, Nebraska, Florida, Georgia, and for the Association of Anglican Musicians. More than 30 of his compositions are currently available from four different publishers.


As a professional singer Sturk has been best known in the role of The Evangelist in the Bach Passions. He made his operatic debut in Monteverdi's Return of Ulysses in a Waverly Consort production both in New York and on national tour. He has also performed and recorded with the New York Philharmonic, The Waverly Consort, Musica Sacra, New York's Ensemble for Early Music, and Steve Reich and Musicians.


An active studio musician, Sturk appears as conductor or singer on more than 35 recordings, and has also been seen in television commercials, videos and movies. Most notable was his appearance on the soundtrack of the Disney animated feature "Beauty and the Beast."
