Benefit Concert: Millennia Consort and the PACEM Choir
California's premiere brass and organ ensemble, The Millennia Consort, presented a program of greatest hits. The Millennia Consort was joined by the 100-voice PACEM Choir in several selections (including some favorite opera choruses) arranged for brass, organ and choir, under the direction of Martin Wright. [PACEM also provides support of the Millennia Consort as ensemble in residence at St. Paul’s Cathedral.]

Workshop: Vocal Technique for Choral Singers
Dr. Virginia Sublett, noted soprano and organist-choirmaster of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Encinitas, presented two 2-hour workshops, one for men’s voices and the other for women’s voices.
Good Friday, March 29, 2002 at 12 Noon at St. Paul’s Cathedral:
PACEM presented the third annual performance of Franz Joseph Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Our Savior from the Cross as part of the Good Friday meditation at St. Paul’s Cathedral. This extraordinary work was performed (in German) in an arrangement for four vocal soloists and string quartet.
Saturday, April 13, 2002 from 9 am to Noon at St. Paul’s Cathedral:
Martin Neary, former organist-choirmaster of Westminster Abbey, led a three-hour workshop session for a group of 60 choral singers, directors and organists. He presented works of Purcell, John Tavener, as well as some original compositions.
Saturday, April 20, 2002 at 2 pm at St. Paul’s Cathedral:
Old-Fashioned Hymn Sing – Executive Director Stephen Sturk led PACEM’s first-ever “Hymn Sing,” accompanied by organist Robert Plimpton. More than 80 people voted for 138 hymns. The top 20 voted hymns were performed by an audience of 80 persons.

Executive Director Stephen Sturk again led this popular workshop on “Sight-Reading for Choral Singers.”
PACEM 2002 Summer Sings Series at St. Paul’s Cathedral:
Back by popular demand, PACEM presented a series of five “Summer Sings.” More than 700 singers took part this year, representing double the numbers from 2001.

A Service of Remembrance: In Memoriam September 11
The PACEM Choir and instrumentalists performed John Rutter’s REQUIEM as part of a Service of Remembrance at St. Paul’s Cathedral marking the one-year anniversary of terrorist attacks on the United States. Attended by an overflow crowd of more than 700, the service concluded with a candlelight vigil.
Sunday, September 15, 2002 at 2 pm at San Dieguito United Methodist Church, 170 Calle Magdalena, Encinitas:
A Tribute to September 11 – Seagate Concerts, Inc. presented the PACEM Choir and instrumentalists in a performance of John Rutter’s REQUIEM, as well as sacred works of PACEM Executive Director Stephen Sturk, Seagate’s composer-in-residence for the 2002-03 season. The program featured soprano soloist Virginia Sublett and organist Alison Luedecke, with composer Stephen Sturk conducting.
Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at 7 pm, St. Paul’s Cathedral:
RUSSICUM: Vocal Ensemble from St. Petersburg, Russia
The internationally acclaimed vocal quartet from St. Petersburg presented a program of Russian Orthodox church music (sung in Slavonic) as well as a group of a cappella Russian folk songs. More than 150 people attended. A free-will offering was taken.
Wednesday, October 16, 2002 at 7 pm, St. Paul’s Cathedral:
Arthur Wills, former organist-choirmaster of Ely Cathedral in England, presented an organ recital. Dr. Wills also worked in rehearsal with the boy Choristers and St. Cecilia girls’ chorus of St. Paul’s Cathedral.
Friday, October 25, 2002 at 8 pm, St. Paul’s Cathedral:
Pianist Gustavo Romero and Beethoven’s Ninth
Super-star pianist Gustavo Romero teamed up with the 40-voice PACEM Choir and soloists to present the World Premiere performance of Richard Wagner’s piano transcription of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. The concert in the marvelous acoustics of St. Paul’s Cathedral also included Mr. Romero playing the mighty “Appassionata” Sonata of Beethoven. About 500 enthusiastic concert-goers enjoyed this historic occasion.

MESSIAH Sing-Along – Stephen Sturk led PACEM’s first “Do-It-Yourself” MESSIAH Sing-Along, covering the complete choruses of Handel’s beloved oratorio, with organist Dr. Steven Gray as accompanist.
