January 6 – 27, 2001 from 10 am to Noon at St. Paul’s Cathedral:
PACEM Executive Director taught a workshop on “Sight-Reading for Choral Singers”.


Thursday, January 11, 2001:
First day of the “second semester” of Kodály Music Classes for children ages 5 to 8. Teachers Rebecca Cress and Maria Yrjola worked with two classes of children (newcomers from 4 to 4:45 pm; all students from previous classes from 5 to 6 pm. Weekly classes continued on Thursday afternoons through March 22. The students also participated in PACEM’s production of Benjamin Britten’s church opera “Noye’s Fludde” (see below) on March 30 and 31.


Friday, February 2, 2001 at 8 pm at St. Paul’s Cathedral:
David Flood, the distinguished Organist and Master of the Choristers at England’s Canterbury Cathedral, presented an organ recital of works by Bach, Franck, Elgar and Messiaen.


Saturday, February 3, 2001 from 9 am to 4 pm in the Great Hall and St. Paul’s Cathedral:
David Flood, Organist and Master of the Choristers at England’s Canterbury Cathedral, led an all-day Children’s Choir Workshop. The sessions were attended by both choristers (boys and girls) and children’s choir directors.


Friday and Saturday, March 30 and 31, 2001 at 7 pm at St. Paul’s Cathedral:
PACEM, the Cathedral Music Department, and the Cathedral Center for the Performing and Visual Arts combined to present two performances of Benjamin Britten’s “Noye’s Fludde” (Noah’s Flood).


Good Friday, April 13, 2001 at 7 pm at St. Paul’s Cathedral:
For the second year in a row, PACEM  presented Franz Joseph Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Our Savior from the Cross as part of the Good Friday meditation at St. Paul’s Cathedral. This extraordinary work was performed (in German) in an arrangement for four vocal soloists and string quartet.


Saturday, April 28, 2001 from 10 am to Noon and 1 pm to 3 pm:
Workshop: “Planning Music for the Liturgical Year and Creative Use of The Hymnal”
Ruben Valenzuela, organist-choirmaster of Trinity Episcopal Church, Escondido, and Stephen Sturk, PACEM Executive Director, led this workshop for music directors, worship leaders and clergy.


Friday, June 15, 2001 at 8 pm at St. Paul’s Cathedral:
Benefit Concert: Millennia Consort and the PACEM Choir
California’s premiere brass and organ ensemble, The Millennia Consort, presented a program of greatest hits, including works of Gabrieli, Handel, Mouret, and Aaron Copland. The Millennia Consort was joined by the PACEM Choir in several selections for brass, organ and voices.


Sunday, June 24 to Wednesday, June 27, 2001:
Executive Director Stephen Sturk and Founding Directors Ty and Penelope Smith attended a conference entitled “The Holiness of Beauty” co-sponsored by Christ Church, New Haven and the Berkeley Divinity School at Yale University.


PACEM 2001 Summer Sings Series at St. Paul’s Cathedral:


PACEM presented four “Summer Sings” at St. Paul’s Cathedral. Based on the popular sing-along Messiah, these four evenings were designed for singers to enjoy learning a new piece, singing an old favorite, working with a new conductor or an old friend. Each evening was concluded with refreshments in the courtyard. The schedule of sings:

Wednesday, July 11, 2001 at 7 pm (90 singers attended) - Felix Mendelssohn’s oratorio, St. Paul, Martin Wright, conductor

Wednesday, July 25, 2001 at 7 pm (60 singers attended) - Leonard Bernstein: Chichester Psalms, David Amos, conductor

Friday, August 10, 2001 at 7 pm (75 singers attended) - W. A. Mozart: Solemn Vespers, Stephen Sturk, conductor


July, 2001
PACEM sponsored a music class for the UPLIFT/Kids at Heart program. Approximately 15 children from the program attended twice-weekly choir rehearsals under the direction of Martin Green at St. Paul’s.


September, 2001
PACEM gave financial support to the residency of The Millennia Consort (organ and brass ensemble) at St. Paul’s Cathedral for the 2001-2002 season.


Thursday, September 6, 2001

Teachers Rebecca Cress and Maria Yrjola worked with two classes of children (beginners from 4 to 4:45 pm; and returning students from 5 to 6 pm Material presented was based on the revolutionary music education philosophy of the Hungarian composer Zoltan Kodály. Weekly classes continued on Thursday afternoons through Nov. 15.
