About Compline
For the harried modern, compline (or complin) provides a touch of the cloistered life, contemplative and serene in the disciplines of prayer and devotion. Members of religious orders in Christian cloisters have, since ancient times, kept the canonical offices—prayers said at fixed times of the day, or “Hours.” Compline is the office of "prayer at the close of the day," a quiet liturgy of lessons, prayers and praise. We have suggested in our e-mail bulletins that the singing of compline is ancient. In this essay you will discover just how ancient.
